Project: Conservation Survey of the Barbara Curtis Adachi Bunraku Collection

Description: This project is from INFO 632 Conservation & Preservation with Prof. Alexis Hagadorn in Fall 2021 (attended virtually). An archival collection was assigned to us, and we were asked to describe the collection's likely condition and make informed recommendations about the collection's treatment, digitization, and rehousing, assuming a certain amount of material degradation.

Role: This project was completed individually.

Methods: In order to make recommendations about the collection's contents, a thorough survey of the finding aid was required. I organized my research based on the formats and series represented there. Certain assumptions about the collection were required in order to make conservation recommendations, which I did based on the age of materials and their sources, along with other information in the finding aid. I also sourced and recommended products for housing the collection.

Rationale: This conservation survey typifies the extensive research required to make informed decisions regarding archival care and treatment of a collection. The Barbara Curtis Adachi Bunraku Collection in particular holds many items of diverse material composition with varied sources, requiring research connecting each facet of an individual object.
